Issue Description
When attempting to open a project file, you encounter the error message Unknown document version (0.0), or This file is corrupt - has no content. The file appears to have normal size properties but refuses to open in any version of the software. You may also see other error messages such as Cannot read Plan file.
Solution
The version 0.0 error typically indicates that the file header has become corrupted, preventing the software from recognizing the file format. This corruption commonly occurs during data transfer operations to external storage devices, network interruptions during cloud synchronization, or interference from system security software during file write operations.
Method 1: Use Open & Repair Function
- Launch the application from your desktop shortcut or start menu.
- When the Start dialog appears, choose Open a Project and click Browse for a Solo Project or navigate to File > Open > Open.
- Browse to your file location and click on the corrupted file ONCE to highlight it.
- Place a checkmark in the Open & Repair Selected file checkbox in the lower right corner of the dialog.
- Click Open and wait for the repair process to complete.
-
The system will report whether the project was successfully repaired or if the file cannot be recovered.
Method 2: Recover from Backup Files
- Navigate to the same folder where your original project file was stored.
- Look for a file with the same name but with a .bpn extension.
- Right-click on the .bpn file and select Open With your current software version.
- Alternatively, from the software's File Open dialog, change the file filter to All file types to display .bpn files.
- Once opened successfully, immediately save the file as a new .pln project using File Save As.
Method 3: Restore from AutoSave Recovery
- Navigate to the AutoSave folder location:
Windows: C:/Users/[User Name]/GRAPHISOFT AutoSave-XX.
macOS: Finder Go hold Alt/Option key Library Application Support GRAPHISOFT AutoSave-XX. - Locate the folder corresponding to your project's crash date and time.
- Open the @ODB_Database_XX subfolder and find the database.fdb file.
- Copy this file to your desktop and rename the extension from .fdb to .pln. Step 5: Open the renamed file using the Open & Repair option described in Method 1.
Prevention Measures
To minimize future occurrences of file corruption:
- Enable Make Backup Copy in Options Work Environment Data Safety & Integrity.
- Configure the AutoSave settings to create recovery files at regular intervals.
- Save project files directly to reliable local storage rather than external devices during active work sessions.
- Configure antivirus software to exclude project file directories from real-time scanning during save operations.
- Ensure stable network connections when working with cloud-synchronized project folders.
