You’ve received a non-orthogonal DWG file—what’s the best approach to begin modeling?
Solution
Archicad's Set Orientation feature allows you to temporarily rotate the working view of your Floor Plan without actually rotating the elements in the project. This can be incredibly useful for aligning the workspace with non-orthogonal elements, simplifying drafting, or improving visualization. Here’s how and when to use it effectively:
When to Use Set Orientation
1. Working on Angled Buildings or Layouts
If your building or elements are not aligned with the default X-Y axes, use Set Orientation to align the workspace with them.
This makes drafting, editing, and placing elements more intuitive.
How to Use Set Orientation
1. Activating Set Orientation
Click on a reference line or two points on the Floor Plan to define the new orientation.
The first click sets the rotation pivot point, and the second click sets the rotation angle.
The Floor Plan will rotate to align with the defined angle.
2. Resetting Orientation
To return to the default orientation.
Alternatively, click the Clear Orientation button from the Navigator toolbar (if visible).
Tips for Using Set Orientation
Save Views with Orientation: If you frequently need a specific rotated view, save it as a View in the Navigator. This ensures quick access without reapplying the rotation each time.
Doesn’t Affect Geometry: Remember, this is a temporary visual aid. It doesn’t alter the orientation of elements or the project.
Combine with Grid Tools: For complex layouts, use custom Grid Systems alongside Set Orientation to make working on non-orthogonal projects easier.
