Description:
I have an Archicad model. Whenever I try to navigate in 3D view, my surfaces are jittered. What is the cause of this issue? How can I fix this? My workstation is above the software requirements and all drivers are up to date.
Solution:
Jittered surfaces are caused by “Far from Origin” issue. Meaning, the model you are trying to navigate is located far from the Archicad’s origin.
After using Fit in Window with all elements turned on (all Layers visible, elements of all Renovation Statuses set to be shown) some small elements are visible placed very far from each other or from the Project Origin.
Other problems caused by Far from Origin:
- distortion when zooming in a long way in 2D
- creating Arc/Circle
- flickering when orbiting/moving in 3D Open GL view (~up to 2-3 000 m)
- rendering with Lightworks Engine (~up to 10 000 m)
- drawings disappearing or displaying as empty on layouts
- elements "dislocated" when selected and zoomed close to in 3D (the corners of the elements are not where the selection nodes are)
- surfaces becoming pixelated in 3D, shaking of the BIMx model during navigation
Far from Origin models can be checked the following way:
- Set all elements visible in the project
- Open Layer Settings (Document > Layers > Layer Settings) where you can set all the layers visible.
- Open Renovation Filter Options (Document > Set Renovation Filter > Renovation Filter Options) and set the existing, to be demolished and new elements in "Show" status on the current Renovation Filter.
- Fit in Window. You can resize your view to show all elements placed in the project. Go to View > Fit in Window command or click the corresponding shortcut button on the bottom scrollbar of the active window. This step should be repeated on all Stories.
- Sometimes, the project is located correctly near the Project Origin but only few elements are far, with this, you can use marquee tool (Selection methods: All Floors) and select “Outside Entirely” in the value.
- Also check if fill handles are located far from the origin.
- Aside from the project, there are also places that needs to be checked that can cause Far from Origin issue.
- Worksheets
- Hotlink Modules
- Xref
- Missing objects that are marked missing in the library manager but originally located far from the origin.
- Using the Coordinate palette can also help determine if an element is located far from the Origin.
After confirming the cause of the issue, we can now proceed in relocating the model near the Project Origin.
Step 1: Set all the Layers
Set all the Layers and Renovation Filters to Show and Unlock. Elements locked by Lock command can be unlocked in Edit menu/Locking.
Step 2: Return the Origin
Double click on User Origin button on Coordinate Palette to return the origin to the Project Origin.
Step 3: Fit in Window
Click on the command Fit in window in the Display menu. The project and hotspot together with the project origin should appear in two different corners of the screen. You can check it with Select All (ctrl+A) command.
Step 4: Select All Stories
Use the bold Marquee to frame the project and use Edit/Select all command, so all the stories become selected.
Step 5: Drag the Project
Drag the project to the project origin. By using Fit in window the project will be adjusted to the screen.
Step 6: Save and reopen the Project Origins are counted during the opening of files. After you repaired the plan, it should be saved, closed and opened again (we recommend using Open & Repair for the first re-opening) to get the updated origins.
Ensuring that your model is positioned appropriately relative to the Project Origin not only enhances the navigation experience but also improves overall project management and accuracy within Archicad.
