Window/Door does not create an opening when placed in a Wall

Issue description

You place a door or window into a and the element does not cut an opening into the wall; the wall surface stays solid around the door or window frame instead of showing a clean opening.

You'll notice that copying the wall's settings with the eyedropper tool to create a new wall does not show this behavior, but using the Drag a Copy command on the original wall brings the problem back.

Solution

This behavior occurs when the wall and the door or window carry different Renovation Status values while the active Renovation Filter shows every status at once. When a filter sets all three Renovation Status options to Show, the elements no longer interact with each other regardless of their assigned status.

Note: A new project starts with every element set to the Existing status, and the default Renovation Filter (00 Show All) displays every status without differentiating between them.

Tip: Open the Renovation Palette from Window > Palettes > Renovation Palette to check or change the Renovation Status of a selected element.

Solution 1: Match the Renovation Status of the elements

Use this solution when you want the wall and the door or window to interact under the current Renovation Filter.

1. Select the wall and note its Renovation Status in the Renovation Palette.

2. Select the door or window that does not cut an opening.

3. Click the icon in the Renovation Palette that matches the wall's status: Existing, New, or To Be Demolished.

4. Confirm the element now cuts an opening into the wall.

Solution 2: Switch to a different Renovation Filter

Use this solution when another existing Renovation Filter already treats the statuses you are using with a Hide or Override setting instead of Show.

1. Open the Renovation Filter settings dialog using one of the following methods:
   1. Select a filter from the Renovation Filter pop-up on the Quick Options Bar.
   2. Select a filter from the Renovation Filter pop-up in the Renovation Palette.
2. Choose a filter such as 06 Planned Status, which shows the Existing and New statuses while hiding elements marked To Be Demolished.
3. Confirm the door or window now cuts an opening into the wall.

Tip: Switch the Renovation Filter to 04 Plan Modification to confirm both statuses at once: the opening in the existing wall fills with yellow for To Be Demolished, while the new door frame shows in red for New.

Solution 3: Edit the settings of the active Renovation Filter

Use this solution when you are using a custom project template, or would like to modify the view's current Renovation Filter and change how that filter treats each status instead.

1. Go to Document > Renovation > Renovation Filter Options.
2. Select the active Renovation Filter from the pop-up at the top of the dialog box.
3. Set the status you want to keep as-is to Show.
4. Set at least one other Renovation Status to Hide or Override so the two statuses no longer share the same Show setting.
5. Click OK to apply the new settings to the current view.
