Description
When troubleshooting software issues that may be related to computer hardware or system configuration, technical support may request a system information file. This file provides a comprehensive report of your computer's hardware specifications, operating system details, and installed components. The appearance of slow performance, crashes, or hardware-related errors often requires analysis of the full system configuration.
Solution
Technical support engineers use system information files to efficiently diagnose hardware-related issues.
Windows (click to expand)
The system information utility msinfo32 generates a comprehensive report of your computer specifications.
Method 1: Using the Run Command
- Press Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog box
- Type msinfo32 in the text field
- Press Enter or click OK
- The System Information window opens displaying your hardware and software configuration
- Click File in the menu bar
Select Save (not Export)
Note: Use Save rather than Export to create the proper file format- Choose a save location, such as your Desktop
- Enter a filename such as SystemInfo
- Click Save
The file saves with the .nfo extension containing all system specifications.
Method 2: Using Windows Search
- Click the Windows Start button or open Search
- Type System Information
- Right-click System Information in the search results
Select Run as administrator
Note: Running as administrator ensures complete driver information is captured- Follow steps 5-9 from Method 1 above
Alternative: Command Line Method
For advanced users, you can generate the system information file directly from Command Prompt:
- Press Windows Key + R
- Type cmd and press Enter
Type the following command:
msinfo32 /nfo C:\Users\YourUsername\Desktop\SystemInfo.nfo- Press Enter
- The file saves automatically to the specified location
macOS (click to expand)
Mac computers use the System Profiler (also called System Information) to generate detailed hardware and software reports.
Method 1: Using System Settings
- Open the System Information.app
- Navigate in Finder to: Applications > Utilities > System Information
- Alternatively, you can press ⌘ + Spacebar to open Spotlight, type System Information, and press Return or Enter key
- In the System Information window, click File > Save
- Choose a save location, such as your Desktop
- Enter a filename such as SystemReport_{your name_lastname}
- Click Save
The file saves in .spx format, containing complete system details.
Method 2: Terminal Command (Advanced)
For users comfortable with Terminal, you can generate a text-based system report:
- Open the Terminal.app
- Navigate in Finder to: Applications > Utilities > Terminal
- Alternatively, you can press ⌘ + Spacebar to open Spotlight, type Terminal, and press Return or Enter key
- Paste the following command into your terminal window:
Option 1: Full System Report
system_profiler > ~/Desktop/FullSystemReport.txt
Option 2: Focused System Report
system_profiler SPHardwareDataType SPSoftwareDataType SPDisplaysDataType SPMemoryDataType SPStorageDataType SPUSBDataType > ~/Desktop/FocusedSystemReport.txt
- Press Enter
- Wait for the command to complete (no progress indicator displays)
- The file saves automatically to your Desktop
Sending the File to Technical Support
Once you have generated the system information file:
- Locate the saved file on your Desktop or chosen location
- Attach the file to your support ticket or email to technical support
- Important: Do not compress (ZIP or RAR) the file unless specifically requested
- For Windows, the file extension should be .nfo
- For Mac, the file extension should be .spx or .txt depending on the method used
Privacy Information
The system information file contains:
- Hardware specifications (CPU, RAM, graphics card)
- Operating system version and build
- Installed software list
- Device drivers and system components
- Computer name and basic configuration
