Issue Description
When designing a structure, you may want to apply various surfaces, colors, and patterns to each wall for aesthetic or functional reasons. You may have attempted to use the Surface Override in the Wall Selection Settings but encountered issues where internal walls have different "Outside Face" and "Inside Face" definitions, leading to inconsistencies. Is there a more efficient way to override surfaces and apply desired colors smoothly?
Solution
There is a simpler and more effective method by using the Surface Painter. This tool allows you to override surfaces easily without the need for complex settings adjustments.
Here’s how to apply different surfaces to walls using the Surface Painter:
- Begin by switching to the 3D view of your model to get a clear view of the surfaces you want to modify. Open Surface Painter: Navigate to Window > Palettes > Surface Painter to open the Surface Painter palette. You can toggle from single or multiple surface applications by long pressing the Paintbrush icon beside the search bar.
- In the Surface Painter palette, select the desired surface you want to apply. Once selected, click Add to Project.
- Apply the Surface: Your cursor will now turn into a “paint brush” icon. Simply click on the face of the wall where you want to apply the new surface.
TIPS: If a wall is continuous but requires different materials for its surfaces, you’ll need to perform a Split operation. This will allow you to apply distinct materials to each section of the wall. For instance, in the example above, the walls are split along the length of each room. By doing so, different wall materials can be assigned for each room, ensuring the design reflects the correct material usage in different areas.
