Issue description
You open your project and all text elements display [missing font] or brackets around font names instead of the proper typeface. No fonts appear to be available in the font selection dropdown menus throughout the interface.
Solution
This happens when the font cache becomes corrupted or when system font settings are disrupted. Default settings in both the software and operating system may require restoration to resolve font recognition problems.
Solution 1: Perform Preferences Cleaning
When standard font troubleshooting methods fail, preferences cleaning can resolve deeper font recognition issues. Proceed to this link for the steps: Preferences Cleaning.
Solution 2: Restore Default Font Settings
If preferences cleaning does not resolve the problem, the issue may be with operating system font settings.
For Windows:
- Open Control Panel by typing
control fontsin the 'Run' dialog. - Navigate to Appearance and Personalization.
- Click on Fonts to access the font management interface.
- Select Font settings from the left panel.
- Click Restore default font settings to reset all font configurations.
-
Restart your computer for changes to take effect.
For Mac:
- Open Font Book from your 'Applications' folder.
- Navigate to Font Book > Settings in the menu bar.
- Click Advanced in the settings dialog.
- Click Reset Fonts and confirm when prompted.
- Enter your administrator password or use Touch ID if requested.
- Restart your Mac to complete the font restoration process.
The font cache may become corrupted on both Windows and Mac systems, requiring restoration of default settings. On Mac, fonts installed by third-party applications will be moved to separate folders during the reset process and can be reinstalled later if needed.
Tip: For best results, use standard fonts like Arial, Times New Roman, or Verdana that are consistently available across different systems. These fonts provide reliable display and reduce compatibility issues when sharing files between workstations.
